Acute Pain vs. Chronic Pain
Learn More About Chronic Pain. There are two types of pain: acute and chronic. Acute is sharp, severe and short-lived – usually related to soft tissue damage. Chronic pain is different. Chronic pain is a more constant source of aches, throbbing, soreness and stiffness that lasts for weeks, months, or even years. The original cause may have been an injury or infection. There may be an ongoing cause of pain, such as arthritis or cancer. In some cases, there is no clear cause. Environmental and psychological factors can make chronic pain worse.
